As I kick off this website and begin to blog, the first question is to ask myself, “where do I start?”
Well…according to Simon Sinek I need to, “Start with the Why;” as in why comedy?
The easy answer is that the ‘why of comedy’ is to make people laugh of course, which is probably the most common answer among comics to be sure.
But what if there is a deeper, more purposeful, and by extension more fulfilling reason? Consider the following Ted Talk by Michael Jr., a very funny and successful comedian who recently gave his reasons for doing comedy as a challenge for us all, no matter what we do:
Interesting right? It’s also inspiring and challenging at the same time. No doubt in a world that is filled with heart-ache, disappointment, and tension, we could all use some punchlines. But according to Michael Jr punchlines are more than the payoff for a good joke; they can also be people doing unexpected things on behalf of others to bring help and even joy into their lives.
That sounds like a great reason to do comedy. In fact, it’s hard not to think of Jesus when I look at comedy in that way. Jesus had no reason at all to do anything except promote Himself; yet, He hose to become the ultimate sacrifice for people who were in no position to expect anything from Him but judgment. In that way,
Jesus is the ultimate punchline!
So why am I doing comedy? I would say that my goals are to be funny (for sure!); but not to settle for just being funny for funny’s sake. I strive to also leverage the funny for a purpose and a reason. I want to make an impact on people’s lives and inspire them if possible. In a nutshell, I want to:
Make people laugh…for a change.
What that change can be I will leave to the wisdom and power of God; but may He help me to be a punchline for others!
